Picking a Location

A data cabinet can contain vital aspects of your business. It is best practice to ensure it is located in a safe and secure environment to prevent unauthorised access and accidental damage to your devices. Relocating the data cabinet can boost your network security and allow for easy maintenance.

Things to Consider

There are a couple of things to consider when planning where your cabinet will be placed. Some of our key points to focus on are:

• Choose a location that can be locked or only accessed by trusted staff.
• Install the cabinet in a room that has good ventilation so the devices do not overheat.
• The cabinet should be easy to access for maintenance.

Our Recent Project

Maidens Events is a lovely wedding venue just outside of Chelmsford that asked us to relocate their cabinet from their boiler room to their meeting room. The staff are very friendly, and it was a pleasure to provide our services for them.

The boiler room would frequently reach more than 40°C, and the cabinet needed a little makeover. There was also a server in the data cabinet, which would benefit from a little extra airflow. The meeting room was just the other side of the wall to the boiler room, so we did not need to move the devices very far to improve security and ventilation.

Initially, we had to work through the maze of cables and identify each one. The cables were lying on top of leftover construction material and mounds of dust. We uncovered the buried server and allowed it to breathe some fresh air.

After identifying and labelling the cables, we disconnected all the devices and removed the data cabinet from the wall. We re-established the network connection to allow staff to continue working whilst we relocated the cabinet.

We cleaned the cabinet to reveal that it could be reused, as only a few small marks remained. Before installing the cabinet, we secured the trunking to the wall. This will hold the network cables and protect them from physical damage.

The cabinet was secured to the wall in the meeting room, and we extended the Ethernet cables so that the devices could be moved.

Once the cables were extended and tested, we reconnected all the devices. The trunking was then closed to secure the cables. The panels to the data cabinet were re-added so that it could be locked and the devices could be protected. The cables are colour-coded for future identification.
